Clusters and Innovation

We create sustainable growth by actively working for cluster and industry development in the Gothenburg region. We do this by identifying strengths, bringing together people from companies, academia and the public sector in valuable networks. We initiate industry partnerships that result in commercially-viable innovations. We're happy to help your company become part of something bigger.

Cluster and innovation development

We develop the Gothenburg region's trade and industry and help companies become more innovative. Perhaps we've already helped your company without you even realising it? Let us explain what we do and what a cluster actually is.

Business Region Göteborg creates the conditions for innovation by strengthening cooperation in industries with growth potential.

Trade and industry in the Gothenburg region has a high R&D content, which also results in world-leading innovative products. But faced with global competition, it becomes increasingly important for the Gothenburg region to create strong regional clusters and innovation environments that are attractive to outside parties. Experience shows that well-functioning cooperation between trade and industry, academia and the public sector is the key to successful industry development.

How we work

As the City of Gothenburg's cluster organisation, we work on behalf of all trade and industry in the Gothenburg region by stimulating the growth of clusters. Business Region Göteborg creates the conditions for innovation by strengthening cooperation in industries with growth potential. The cooperation model can vary depending on the circumstances faced by the industry.

What we do

  • Initiate industry partnerships that result in business development and commercially viable innovations.
  • Bring together people from companies, academia and the public sector in valuable networks.
  • Create different activities and initiatives adapted to each industry, such as meeting places, networks and projects, based on needs identified in trade and industry.

Bridging the gaps

Our work is based on cluster development in accordance with the triple helix model, which in simple terms entails close collaboration between companies, academia and the public sector.

Within an industry, we identify which "bridges" need to be built or strengthened in order to develop the industry and thereby create growth. In the next stage, we create flows or traffic on these bridges. This can entail traffic between companies and research or capital, but even between small and large companies, traffic to other clusters or sectors and, importantly, international traffic. We work to bridge innovation and business gaps in clusters.

Apple and Google and Gothenburg

What do Apple and Google have in common? Well, the same as SKF and Volvo when they were founded.

The most important common denominator for innovative companies is namely that they have their home bases in special environments. This usually involves a group of companies with links to each other, to adjacent institutions or organisations within an industry or industries that collaborate and help leverage each other.

Sometimes this happens spontaneously. Apple and Google, both out of Silicon Valley, are examples of this. Just like Gothenburg and the environment in which the auto cluster was created. But there are also other ways to support industries. We use cluster development.

Clusters make it possible for companies to be more innovative than if they acted alone. This is why we can say that we've helped companies without them actually realising it.
