The right tools helped Barex move forward

In an industry characterised by tough competition, the choice is to develop or go out of business. But change work is complicated and bewildering, especially for a newly-appointed company manager. For Barex and the Dilato Group, this is a journey they have chosen to make together with the growth program, Expedition Forward.

Johanna Pettersson has to be tough. She has been general manager of Barex for six months, and gone from a salesperson to manager in eighteen months.

She replaced the man who had founded and led the business since the early 1990s. That in itself was a real challenge, but made even more difficult because the organization had problems.

“I have to trust myself to lead the company my way instead of trying to be like someone else. That's why I was appointed, but it is a challenge to initiate change, and for me, Business Region Göteborg’s support has been invaluable,” says Johanna Pettersson.

“The consultants have been extremely different in their orientation so we have gotten very comprehensive assistance. I see them as a giant toolbox where you can choose the right tool for any given problem. That is worth more than gold!

New start with external support
Barex works with barcode solutions and sells, among other things, scanners, forklift computers, label printers, software and labels. A problem from the beginning was that the group's overall activities were quite spread out and that the companies needed a clearer common vision regarding objectives.  The management group had realized this and knew that a fresh start would require external support.

“Without Expedition Framåt we would never have come this far. The program's consultants did not arrive with a predetermined solution for change but have been tough and constantly pushed us to take the next step. Business Region Göteborg has made things happen for us,” says Johanna Pettersson.

"Comprehensive assistance"
For example, the Group has been reorganized from two to five companies and we have developed a three-year plan for the Dilato Group, which has then been broken down for each company. This will provide a clearer focus and better control of the respective operations, but still result in a common vision and goal.  Johanna Pettersson describes Business Region Göteborg’s role in the work.

“The consultants have been extremely different in their orientation so we have gotten very comprehensive assistance. I see them as a giant toolbox where you can choose the right tool for any given problem. That is worth more than gold!

Today, the work is going in the right direction for Barex. Johanna Pettersson is pleased that the management team started the change process in time, when they had the margins and everything just flowed.

“It's never easy to get an entire organisation to follow a mindset, which as a member of the management team you have lived with for a long time, but it is much easier if you don’t have to contend with strained finances at the same time. There is a lesson that you can take with you; dare to be proactive.
